Using the Bonus Mission Pack tomes
With the Guild Wars: Bonus Mission Pack now live, it’s time to drag yourself away from Eye of the North and start exploring the historical missions that Historian Durmand is making available. The first step is to head to Lions Arch, Kaineng Centre, or Kamadan, and speak to Historian Durmand. For each historical mission, Durmand will give you a tome and the hero’s weapon.
If you double click on each tome to open them, you’ll immediately notice similarities between these historical tomes and the Eye of the North books, the Hero’s Handbook, the Master Dungeon Guide, and Zho’s Journal. Have a look at our previous blog posting about Eye of the North books for more information on how they work.
Each historical tome contains 6 possible missions. The first three have some background on their pages, as well as an Enter Mission button at the bottom of the page to start the mission. Only after you’ve successfully completed the first three missions will the remaining three be unlocked, one by one.
The full list of missions are:
- Gwen’s Story
Collective Quest: The Flight North- 1. End of the World
- 2. The First Escape
- 3. Into the Arena
- 4. Through the Ruins
- 5. The Ebon Vanguard
- 6. Champion of Ascalon
- Saul’s Story
Collective Quest: The Rise of the White Mantle- 1. The Fallen Man
- 2. The Unseen Ones
- 3. A Final Mission
- 4. Desperation
- 5. Salvation
- 6. Rise of the White Mantle
- Turai’s Story
Collective Quest: The Battle of Jahai- 1. The Scourge of Vabbi
- 2. Battle’s Eve
- 3. Sneak Attack
- 4. Above Jahai
- 5. The Duel
- 6. Joko Entombed
- Togo’s Story
Collective Quest: The Tengu Accords- 1. The Humble Scholar
- 2. The Tengu Wars
- 3. House of Wona
- 4. Betrayal
- 5. Togo and Talon
- 6. Peacemaker
When you play through each mission, you’ll be playing as the historical character: Saul D’Alession, Turia Ossa, Master Togo, or Gwen. This means you’ll have their skills, armour, bonuses, and weapons.
This can be a bit disorientating if you’re not used to playing other classes. However, the historical heroes seem pretty well balanced, and they are well prepared for the battles ahead. The missions themselves are challenging and a lot of fun, with some great cinematic sequences. They fill out some of the key Guild Wars back story very well, and add a lot of depth to an already involving game.
Once you have completed all six missions in a tome, speak to Historian Durmand again. Ask him to Authorize a book - you can now exchange it with one of the nearby scribes, and in return get a customised weapon used by the historical hero in the missions.
Completing each mission also unlocks Discovery Mode, adding three new bonus goals in each mission. For each of these bonuses you complete, Durmand will give you another Authorized book. This can only be done once per account, which means you can earn up to 4 copies of each Authorized tome.
The books must be kept in your inventory to be used and authorized, and it seems that once Historian Durmand gives you a book, it is customised to your character. This makes sense - no so much because it stops book trading with other characters, but because it limits these special missions just to those people who qualified for the Bonus Mission Pack.
The missions in the Bonus Mission Pack are great fun. Not only do they test your Guild Wars skills with unfamiliar classes and skills, but they also have great storylines with familiar characters that add greatly to the already deep storyline of Guild Wars.
