Eye of the North dungeons: The Catacombs of Kathandrax

There are few places that look cooler than Sacnoth Valley in Eye of the North. The burning forest looks amazing, and battling Charr in the midst of such a firestorm is great fun. In the middle of all of this is the three level dungeon, Catacombs of Kathandrax.

Journeying to the south east of Sacnoth Valley will bring you to Swithin Nye, a member of the Ebon Vanguard who was sent to the Catacombs of Kathandrax to retrieve the famous Dwarf weapon, Kathandrax’s Crusher. His party were ambushed by the Charr and forced to retreat, and now he needs your help.

The Catacombs of Kathandrax are full of fire related monsters - Magma Blisters, Flame Djinns, Needling Lavastriders, and some Infernal Siege Wurms for good measure. Burning will occur almost constantly, so good skills to have are Extinguish and Breath of the Great Dwarf. A LoD Monk build will be hugely helpful, as Light of Deliverance is excellent for good party wide healing.

There are some good Light of Deldrimor rewards available in the Catacombs of Kathandrax - just look out for fire traps.

  • Level 1:
    • Dwarven Ghost at the Beacon of Droknar near the northen area map.
    • 2 Hidden Treasures in the large furnace room. One near southern furnace and one between the two furnaces.
    • Dwarven Ghost at the Beacon of Droknar just above the dungeon key location.
    • Hidden Treasure near the Area Map just past dungeon door
    • Dwarven Ghost at the Beacon of Droknar at the dungeon lock.
    • Hidden Treasure in the last room to right of bridge just before dungeon level exit.
  • Level 2
    • Hidden Treasure at the first Area map location (north-west).
    • Another Hidden Treasure at the second Resurrection Shrine, on your way to the dungeon key, in the middle of the first ‘hall’ you go through.
    • A third Hidden Treasure just behind the Regent of Flame that drops the dungeon key.
  • Level 3
    • Hidden Treasure in the middle of the first room, near the Beacon of Droknar.
    • In the second room passed the boss lock, there is a Hidden Treasure near the fire dart on your right (south-west).
    • The third room (passed the first flame guardian), close to the entrance, has a Hidden Treasure.

Once Ilsundur, Lord of Fire has been defeated, a Chest of Kathandrax appears. It will spawn Kathandrax’s Crusher, and one of the following items for each player:

  • Elementalist Ilsundur’s Rod (unique green item)
  • Elementalist Ilsundur’s Focus (unique green item)
  • Elementalist Ilsundur’s Staff (unique green item)
  • Astral Staff (gold item)
  • Diamond (rare crafting material)
  • Onyx Gemstone (rare crafting material)

You will also gain 1500 Ebon Vanguard reputation points (2250 in Hard Mode).

On the third level, make a beeline for the Flame Guardian, and take him out quickly. Once he’s defeated, the Fire Darts and Flame Jets in that area will be disabled. Also be careful around the Becalmed Djinn on Level 3. Although they show up on the map as enemies, they will not attack unless attacked first. If they are killed, the following dialogue will appear:

“As the calming influence of the djinn fades, the fury of the surrounding creatures begins to boil over.”

All the surrounding monsters will instantly aggro, and be blessed with Judge’s Insight. Your party can easily be wiped out, so it pays to tread carefully in this area, and control or pull back any Minions and Pets.

The fire effects in Guild Wars are very nice, and it’s easy to get killed off while admiring the scenery in the Catacombs of Kathandrax. It’s definitely one of the best dungeons in Eye of the North, and has huge replay value, if only because travelling through it is such a great experience.
