Shards of Orr

The final dungeon in Eye of the North is Shards of Orr. Guild Wars 2 will feature the return of the Lost Continent of Orr, so Shards of Orr is possibly a taste of what is to come. Personally I hate this dungeon - it can be very tough and you can find yourself easily racking up a big death penalty.

You have to travel through the first level of Shards of Orr to get to Gadd’s Encampment, as part of the Asura storyline. It can be entered directly though an Asura gate in the Encampment, but you need to speak to Crewmember Shandra and get the quest Lost Souls, which means going out (or coming in) from the Arbor Bay entrance.

You’ll be wanting Light of Deldrimor regardless, because of the Holy Damage it can do against Undead foes. The following secrets are really just a bonus ;-)

  • Level 1:
    • lvl 24 Dwarven Ghost ally near the steps to level 2
    • Hidden Treasure near the dungeon key.
    • Hidden Treasure half way between the dungeon key and portal to Gadd’s Encampment
    • lvl 24 Dwarven Ghost ally near the Dungeon lock
    • lvl 24 Dwarven Ghost ally beside the Beacon of Droknar at the exit to Gadd’s Encampment
  • Level 2:
    • There are 2 Hidden Treasures, and 2 Dwarven Ghosts near the exit
    • 2 Hidden Treasures in the graveyard
    • 2 lvl 24 Dwarven Ghost allies in the graveyard
    • 2 Hidden Treasures next to traps
  • Level 3:
    • 2 Hidden Treasures in the area that opens after torches are lit
    • 3 Hidden Treasures in the dragon room just before the final boss

Once the boss, Fendi Nim, has been defeated, Fendi’s Chest spawns, giving one of the following items (two in Hard Mode) to each player:

    • Necromancer Fendi’s Rod (unique green item)
    • Necromancer Fendi’s Focus (unique green item)
    • Necromancer Fendi’s Staff (unique green item)
    • Suntouched Staff (rare gold item)
    • Diamond (rare crafting material)
    • Onyx Gemstone (rare crafting material)
    • A gold Polymock Piece

The first time you complete the dungeon you will get 3000 Asuran Reputation Points (4000 in Hard Mode).

I’ll be following up this post with a short walkthrough, and a discussion of builds. This information is invaluable if you want to complete the dungeon and not get frustrated with it.

Almost all the monsters in this dungeon are Undead - Smiting Monks are a must have for your party. Forget Minion Masters - few monsters leave corpses behind, and the large number of Necromancers in the dungeon also means the few corpses there are will quickly be exploited by your foes.

I have found this one of the hardest dungeons in Eye of the North. Heroes seem to use Smiting Monk builds poorly, and the large groups of enemies mean your henchmen are more difficult to control than normal. The groups of enemies are also very well balanced, making kiting and strategic kills much more difficult. The rewards in Shards of Orr are pretty good, but for me, there are more fun places to explore.
