Diagnostics from within the Guild Wars client
Today’s Guild Wars game update has brought with it a nice little diagnostics tool, which gives players some functionality that has been around in other MMOs for a while.
You’ll notice on the login screen is a new option - “Test My Computer”. Clicking on this will launch a new diagnostic test, which will go away and measure:
- Adapter settings
- Network connections
- External address
- Server connectivity
- Network paths
- DirectX diagnostics
Once it’s finished, you can click on the “View Results” button to launch a text file with all of the test results in it. You can find the output stored in the root of your Guild Wars directory (which defaults to C:\Program Files\Guild Wars on Windows XP).
Not only will this help speed up ArenaNet’s response to support tickets, but you can also use it to diagnose any connectivity or gameplay issues, like stuttering or slow frame rate.
Another new goodie is that if you now hold down CTRL-ALT-SHIFT, the game resolution will reset to 800×600. This is handy if, for example, like me you swap out your monitor for a new one and find that the game resolution is so badly wrong you can’t reset it from within the Guild Wars client. Saved me some pain, I can tell you.
