Review: The Unofficial Guild Wars Elementalist Guide
Pros:
- Elementalist Elite Skill index is hugely useful
- skill and armor guides cover both PvP and PvE builds
- Guild Wars gold farming techniques specifically for Elementalists
Cons:
- only focuses on the Elementalist, not much use for other classes
- more coverage of secondary professions would be handy
Our recommendation: A well written class-specific guide that will get you quickly specialised with a powerful Elementalist build. Suitable for new or experienced players. Caters to both PvE and PvP players.
The Elementalist can be one of the most powerful characters in Guild Wars, and is by far and away my favourite class. I’ve been playing an Elementalist since the UK launch of Guild Wars, getting on for four years now. With careful planning and a good understanding of attributes and the skills involved, Elementalists are the supreme damage dealers.
The Unofficial Guild Wars Elementalist Guide doesn’t assume any prior knowledge of Guild Wars, and so is suited to complete beginners. Established players will find lots of helpful hints, and I’ve found that it makes a great reference to have to hand when playing.
The Guide covers the quickest and easiest route to progress your character from the starting areas up to Level 20. Along with the level progression is a guide to each are of Guild Wars, with details on short cuts to take to get to hidden outposts, and guides to specific tactics to deal with the unique monsters in each area. As a highly specialised Pyromancer, I picked up some good tips from this, and went back to play through some quests which had previously been a bit touch and go.
The Elementalist Spells section is particularly handy. Not only does it contain a comprehensive list of spells, it also details their effects, and how to use them in different character builds. An elite skill capturing index shows you which mobs will drop which Elite Elementalist Skills, which is hugely helpful – especially if you’re pursuing the Title Tracks and need to capture all those Elite skills. Many builds depend on having a couple of Elite skills to choose from, and I’ve found this index to be a great help in tracking down the last few I’d missed.
The armour guide is written with input from pro-gamers – the Guilds who compete for money in prizes at the highest level. It’s good to see input from people who really know their stuff, and the discussion about runes, and how to plan your armour to enhance your character’s build, will prove to be a great help to players wanted to specialise.
Other sections include a guide to gaining Guild Wars Gold, with information on some of the best farming locations most suited to Elementalists. Using the devastating area of effect (AoE) skills that the Elementalist has, you can quickly earn some impressive amounts of gold with some careful farming and specialised character builds.
The final main section covers weapons, weighing up the pros and cons of two handed weapons – like the various Staffs – versus single handed items like Wands and Focus items. There are some good tips here to help customise your build, and beginner as well as experienced players will get a lot from this.
The Unofficial Guild Wars Elementalist Guide weighs in at 50 pages, available as a PDF ebook that can be instantly downloaded and viewed. The focus is purely on the Elementalist character class – there is some helpful information here that could apply to other classes, but this isn’t a generic Guild Wars guide for all players.
If you want the amazing damage dealing power of an Elementalist, this guide is for you. Highly recommended.
